Building Bonds Through Service: BSU’s Alpha Sigma Tau Group Supports Local Community

Community, service, and sisterhood were on full display when members of the Bridgewater State University sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau, joined us at GiftsToGive.

This amazing group of sisters brought high energy and positive vibes during their visit. They spent the day supporting our mission by sorting, organizing, and carefully inspecting children’s clothing. Every item was checked to ensure that it was in good condition and appropriate for the children who will receive it. Working together, they helped prepare everything for distribution, making a real difference in the local community.

Founded on values of leadership, philanthropy, and lifelong connection, Alpha Sigma Tau is committed to empowering women and fostering strong connections among its members. According to Alpha Sigma Tau’s 2026 Vice President of Community Relations Savina Moschella, “Alpha Sigma Tau is a national sorority that focuses on empowering women to grow into confident leaders while building strong, supportive friendships. Our sorority stands for values like graciousness, respect, intellect, connections, and excellence. It’s really about creating a lifelong sisterhood while encouraging members to make a positive impact on the world around them.”

Community service is a cornerstone of the organization, with members consistently engaging in volunteer events, fundraising efforts, and service projects on campus and throughout the local community. At the heart of their work is a focus on women’s wellness and empowerment, as well as supporting families and children through donation drives, Relay for Life, and Bridgewater State’s Bear Essentials program. Moschella emphasized that contributing to these causes is deeply meaningful, noting that “the impact feels very personal and rewarding.”

Alpha Sigma Tau’s mission emphasizes growth, service, and inclusivity. The organization aims to cultivate active, self-reliant members by providing the skills needed to navigate life while inspiring members to enrich their own lives and the lives of others. The sorority supports this mission through academic programs, leadership opportunities, and service initiatives. As a chapter, members also host events, take part in philanthropic activities, and foster a supportive and welcoming environment that helps everyone succeed both on campus and beyond campus.

Moschella reflected, “Our chapter has been active for 12 years. What drew me to Alpha Sigma Tau was the genuine sense of community and support I felt from the members and advisors. Everyone was welcoming, and I could see how much they truly cared about each other and their impact on the community.”

Philanthropy is a core part of Alpha Sigma Tau’s identity. When members learned about GiftsToGive through community connections and local service opportunities, they were eager to get involved.

“One moment that stood out during our time at GiftsToGive was seeing just how many donations come in and how much organization it takes to get these items to the right people,” said Moschella. “It really showed us the impact of our work and how even small tasks contribute to something much bigger.”

What started as a simple act of service turned into something more meaningful for this group of sisters.

“Volunteering together strengthens our bond because we’re working toward a shared goal and supporting each other along the way. It builds teamwork, communication, and trust. Experiences like this also give us a deeper appreciation for service and remind us why giving back is so important,” shared Moschella.
